Japanese black tea

Black tea grown and made in Japan, usually gentle in astringency.

Wakoucha is black tea grown and produced in Japan. Most Japanese tea plants are of the small-leaved Chinese line, and the teas tend to be gentle in astringency with a soft sweetness.

It was made for export in the Meiji era, then dwindled after import liberalisation. In recent years small producers across the country have revived it, and the differences between regions and cultivars are worth exploring.
