Benihomare

Registered as Cha Norin No. 1 — the first Japanese cultivar bred for black tea.

Benihomare was registered as Cha Norin No. 1, the first Japanese cultivar bred specifically for black tea, developed when domestic black tea production was a national project.

Japanese black tea declined after import liberalisation, but as wakoucha has grown again, more makers are returning to this cultivar.
